Short on outdoor space? You don’t need a sprawling backyard to grow fresh organic culinary herbs. A vertical pallet planter takes up zero floor footprint while providing tiers of fresh basil, thyme, rosemary, mint, and cilantro right outside your kitchen door.

Finding the Right Pallet Safely

Always inspect wooden shipping pallets for safety stamps. Look for the HT (Heat Treated) or DB (Debarked) stamp. Avoid pallets stamped with MB (Methyl Bromide), which indicates chemical fumigation.

Materials Needed

  • One Clean Heat-Treated (HT) Wood Pallet.
  • Heavy-Duty Landscape Fabric.
  • Heavy-Duty Staple Gun & Stainless Steel Staples.
  • Sandpaper & Non-toxic Outdoor Wood Sealant.
  • High-Quality Container Potting Soil.
  • Assorted Herb Seedlings (Basil, Parsley, Oregano, Thyme, Mint).

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Sand and Seal: Sand down rough splintered edges. Apply non-toxic linseed oil or eco-friendly sealant to protect the wood from weather.
  2. Create Planting Pockets: Measure and fold landscape fabric into double-layered U-shaped pouches inside each tier. Staple securely along the back and bottom slats every 2 inches.
  3. Add Potting Mix: Fill each pocket with nutrient-rich, lightweight organic container potting soil.
  4. Plant Your Herbs Strategically:
    • Top Tiers (Maximum Sun): Sun-loving Rosemary, Thyme, and Oregano.
    • Middle Tiers: Sweet Basil, Parsley, and Chives.
    • Bottom Tier (Cooler/Moister): Mint (isolated in its own pocket so it cannot take over) and Cilantro.
  5. Water Gently: Water from the top tier down, allowing excess moisture to trickle through lower tiers.
